UNANIMOUS WINNER OF TARPON SPRING

BLACK HERITAGE PUBLIC ART COMPETITION

TARPON SPRINGS
BLACK HERITAGE PROJECT

‘ONWARD, UPWARD, and FORWARD TOGETHER’ is the title of companion sculptures for the two sites in the City of Tarpon Springs, Florida. The project is an effort by the Tarpon Springs Public Art  Committee to celebrate the little known history of African American and  Bahamian involvement in the sponging  industry which made the City famous. Sculpture #1 will occupy a waterfront site and focus on sponge hooking and diving. Sculpture #2 will expand the narrative to recognize the African American and Bahamian communities which evolved as a result of this industry.
